What Is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra, also known as "yogic sleep," is a different form of yoga — it involves no physical postures at all. We lie down comfortably, usually with pillows and blankets, and let the teacher's voice guide us into a journey of deep relaxation.
This is an ancient practice of guided meditation that leads to a state of deep physical, mental, and emotional relaxation.
What a Yoga Nidra Class Includes:
It's the most restful form of yoga, since it involves no physical movement at all.
During the practice, you're in a state between waking and sleep, where the body sleeps deeply but the mind remains fully conscious.
In practice, we find ourselves in a state between wakefulness and sleep, relaxed enough for our nervous system to "downshift," yet present enough to follow the guidance.
The Yoga Nidra class includes a slow "scanning" of attention across the whole body (a body scan), simple visualizations, and long stretches of silence. You lie on your back in Savasana, usually with a blanket, so you're completely comfortable. You simply follow the teacher's voice as she guides you. There's nothing to "achieve" — just listen, and try not to fall asleep (although falling asleep is common for beginners).
What Are the Benefits of Yoga Nidra?
- Sleep replenishment: 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra are said to rest the body as much as 3-4 hours of conventional sleep.
- Reduced anxiety and trauma: Calms the nervous system and helps manage chronic stress, depression, and post-traumatic stress (PTSD).
- Improved insomnia: Trains the mind and body how to relax, making it easier to fall asleep at night.
- Access to the subconscious: Helps shift negative habits and beliefs.
The benefits of Yoga Nidra are impressive for something so simple, and it genuinely suits everyone — no flexibility, strength, or even prior yoga experience required.
It's ideal for people with full, stressful schedules, for those who struggle to relax, or simply for a deep pause within the week.
